      _______________________________________________

Mike Lax is a hobbyist beekeeper from North Wales. He lives on an island near the Welsh coast and has 16 hives which he moves to catch seasonal flowerings. He sells his honey at local markets including one which has been operating uninterrupted under Royal Seal for 800 years. Mike trains new beekeepers for his beekeeping club, speaks at regional forums and is studying to be a Master Beekeeper.

He is visiting family in Perth for Christmas and we asked him to talk to us about his experiences with European bee pests and diseases, wintering hives, local honey flows, strains of bees for his area and how he is rearing Queens to combat Varroa.

In turn he wants to find out how our hobbyist industry works, how we train new beekeepers, what pathways exist to become commercial and to see what a functioning FlowHive looks like.

Mike’s presentation promises to be a very interesting one. A panel of our beekeepers will direct your questions to Mike.

So, if you aren’t shopping on this night, or want an excuse to avoid it, then come along and join in the discussion.

But be punctual. The DAFWA building will be secured after 6.30 and entry after this time will be difficult. Parking is available near the front entry and across the road.
