BEST PRACTICE GUIDELINES FOR URBAN BEEKEEPING
In the five year period between 2015 to 2020 the number of registered beekeepers in Western Australia grew by nearly 500 new beekeepers per year to over 3500 beekeepers, with most in urban areas. With this growth in beekeepers in urban areas WAAS recognised the need to develop Best-Practice Guidelines for Urban Beekeepers.
These best-practice guidelines are to assist in the harmonious cooperation between beekeepers and their community. Compliance with the guidelines will ensure that the keeping of bees does not become a nuisance. This guideline provides a reference point and standards for beekeeping in urban areas, including:
- Establishing practices to which beekeepers should comply to prevent their beehives from becoming a nuisance
- Giving the community confidence in the safety of beekeeping activities
- Helping local government and regulatory bodies establish rules for beekeeping
- providing a standard against which any nuisance complaints can be resolved
- Promoting a competency standard for beekeepers
All WAAS Members are expected to comply with these guidelines and those that apply within their local government area as well as those contained in the Biosecurity and Agricultural Management Act and Regulations.
